Synopsis

Ashik is a deeply moving love story inspired by the true life of Ashik Veysel, a master of the centuries-old Anatolian ashik (folk poet) tradition. Blinded by smallpox at the age of seven, Veysel falls deeply in love with Esma. Though they marry and have children, Esma refuses to reciprocate his devotion and leaves him for another man, Mehmet. Devastated and heartbroken, Veysel embarks on his first journey away from his homeland, accompanied only by his loyal friend, violinist Kurd Kasım. This journey of sorrow and self-discovery marks the beginning of his transformation into Ashik Veysel, the legendary folk poet.

Through immense pain, love, and loss, Veysel matures spiritually and emotionally, discovering a profound, divine love that shapes his art and soul. The film portrays how his personal grief and longing merge with Sufi philosophy and music, ultimately giving rise to a universal cultural legacy that transcends language, religion, and ethnicity. Ashik brings to life the enduring tradition of Anatolian folk poetry through the true story of a man whose heartbreak becomes a source of timeless inspiration. In his sorrow and devotion, Veysel exemplifies how love and art can illuminate the human spirit, making his story both deeply personal and universally resonant.
