Set in Istanbul during the September 1955 pogrom, the story follows Behçet, the only son of a father with strong political and bureaucratic influence in Antakya. While studying as an assistant researcher at the faculty of law, Behçet becomes entangled with an extreme nationalist movement, shaped by his upbringing and his father’s powerful example. His loyalty to the movement appears steadfast—until Elena enters his life. A Greek prostitute exploited by her grandmother after being abandoned by her mother, Elena is fully aware that Behçet secretly watches her. Over time, they grow close, their forbidden love challenging the political and social structures that dominate Behçet’s world. Their relationship incites the disapproval of both his father and his father’s political allies.
Tragedy strikes when Behçet’s friend Suat dies, revealing his father’s complicity in silencing dissidents. This revelation forces Behçet to confront the moral compromises of his political affiliations. Soon after, Elena is found dead, the victim of an activist’s violence. Grief-stricken, Behçet holds her in his arms and recalls her final words, which leave an indelible mark on his conscience. The story is a haunting exploration of love, political fanaticism, and the personal costs of blind loyalty in a time of societal upheaval.
